Some direct-drive applications, such as robotic actuators and electric vehicle propulsion, demand efficient operation across a wide speed range and adaptable load capabilities. To address these requirements, this paper introduces a novel compound permanent magnet machine (PMM) featured with a compact equinumerous-slot-pole (ESP) structure. The proposed machine integrates a permanent magnet vernier machine (PMVM) and a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), combining the capabilities of both low-speed high-torque and high-speed efficient direct-drive. Meanwhile, the area of machine's high-efficiency zone (≥80%) is significantly expanded to over 83%. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) verifies the machine's basic electromagnetic performance, demonstrating its significant potential for emerging direct-drive applications.
