This paper describes the results of a study of potential air pollution reduction effects of advanced transport telematics. The project involves the field testing and demonstration of advanced traffic management, travel and traffic information and public transport information systems and the implementation of strategic information systems (SIS) which will provide dynamic decision-making tools to assist in the development of transport strategies. The paper includes a review of IVHS implementations. Work carried out to develop and modify the UROPOL air pollution prediction model is described. There is a short exploration of the relationship between IVHS and protection of the environment, illustrating how close cooperation between engine designers and transportation planners can allow an integrated approach to the evaluation of the air quality effects.<>
