An approach for assessing the air pollution impacts of advanced transport telematics (ATT) implementations in the cities of Southampton and Cologne is described. Proposed ATT implementations are outlined, together with the likely effects on traffic and air quality. Recommendations are made for the evaluation of the air pollution reduction effects associated with ATT technologies. UROPOL, the model at the center of the evaluation procedure, is described, together with work carried out to interface UROPOL with the respective traffic models, and with Ford's CVSP. A discussion of the future development of an AQM, a system for optimizing urban transport networks on environmental criteria, rather than efficiency alone is given.
