This paper proposes a cost-effective hardware model after critical investigation and modeling of closed loop armature controlled four quadrant DC motor drive using a PI controller. The proposed model was able to track and maintain the speed to reference speed even on application of a load to rated value and was successfully able to do regenerative braking in forward and reverse mode. The DC motor was successfully operated in all the four quadrants. Thus, providing ideal speed regulation and energy efficient drive. The proposed work was performed on a separately excited DC motor of 1 H.P, 220V, 4A rating.
