Recent developments in rare earth-doped planar waveguide lasers in glass and LiNbO/sub 3/ are reviewed, and the first demonstration of an integrated Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) laser in a neodymium-doped glass channel waveguide is described. A new technique for making volume gratings in thermal ion-exchanged glass waveguides is also presented. The technique is based on photobleaching a gamma ray-induced absorption defect center which is located at a wavelength of 330 nm.<>
