The two main challenges for Cognitive Radio systems are the identification of available bands for opportunistic communication and the co-existence of Cognitive Radio users; these challenges are revisited in this paper. Availability of two potential bands is analyzed based on spectrum sensing results. A mixed signal IC technique is proposed to improve co-existence of Cognitive Radio systems. It is shown that the co-existence of Cognitive Radio systems is improved through spread spectrum technique, at the expenses of major system complexity and limited bandwidth efficiency.
