Freeway maintenance has negative influence on traffic flow. To find an appropriate time to carry out maintenance work, a freeway maintenance model based on Nagel-Schreckenberg (NaSch) model is proposed in this study. It includes three submodels: the model under normal traffic conditions, the maintenance model for the carriageway and the maintenance model for the overtaking lane. Vehicle types and driver characteristics influence the traffic flux in the freeway traffic system, so we analyze their relationship based on our simulation data. According to the results, if carriageway is in maintenance, the constructors had better not maintain the lane when the density is 0.1–0.2 and the proportion of large type vehicle is 0.4. For the maintenance of overtaking lane, the maintenance should be avoided when the density is 0.25 and the proportion of large type vehicle is small.
