The electromagnetic environment (EME) of the motor vehicle is described. The present state of EMC standards for radiated susceptibility (RS) testing is presented. A classification of vehicle electronics with respect to its safety in case of malfunctions caused by EMI is proposed. A possible way of defining a 'representative' EMC for the motor vehicle is shown, so that EMC limits for RS testing can be established. Finally, examples of RS test limits applied in the automotive industry are presented.
