Laser-induced breakdown (LIB) in liquids is of special interest due to its potential application in medicine. We have developed a fs two-color interferometer using an amplified mode-locked Ti:Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ laser with 100 fs pulse width. we investigated the optical breakdown induced in water in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the pump beam. We identified and analyzed the formation and expansion of the LIB in fs, ps and ns time scales.
