The usual approach of the longitudinal strength of ships comprising calculation of the still water bending moment and the wave bending moment ignores the high frequency stresses induced by slamming: the designer allows for these whipping stresses, as well as for stress concentration and corrosion. Information on slamming effect however being available on four ships ranging from 130 to 230 m, a formulation of the whipping bending moment is suggested which might well apply to most cargo ships in this ship range. Two values of a whipping bending moment coefficient are ascertained, one at a probability 10-5, the second at a probability 10-8.
