Dynamic behaviors of a ship among rough seas are investigated by taking account of nonlinearities caused by hydrodynamic impact, the ship's hull shape and configurations. The ship's motions and longitudinal strength in regular waves of high wave height are discussed on the basis of a concept similar to the so-called strip theory, and its validity is confirmed by a series of model tests. Example calculations are performed for two flat-bottomed ships with shallow fore-draft and a slender container ship with large bow-flare. Characteristics of slamming and whipping were clarified by the present theory.(Wassmann)
