Energy efficiency for road- and street-, railway-, air- and water transportation has been estimated both in passenger and freight modes. Energy efficiency has been calculated by dividing passenger or ton kilometres by energy consumption. Energy efficiency for passenger mode is highest in railway for intercity passenger (1.47 km/MJ) and lowest in air for domestic scheduled traffic (0.19 km/MJ). For freight modes highest energy efficiency is in water traffic for floatage (8.40 km/MJ) and lowest in air traffic.
