The Moss Rosenberg Verft spherical tank type LNG containment system, defined as an independent Type B tank stipulated by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Resolution, may reduce the secondary barrier, provided its structural safety is established through detailed stress analyses and the 'leak before failure' concept. Therefore, to prove its safety, MHI carried out an extensive theoretical and experimental investigations on hull form, tank system, cargo handling and construction method before commencing the design work. Among these investigations, this paper gives an outline of the research on ship motion, wave load, stress, buckling and vibration analyses. The reliability of these studies has been successfully verified through various kinds of measurements in the pressure test, gas trial, sea trial and voyages after delivery.
