Complaints about the air pollution around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and worries about possibly increased risk of cancer has led to a study of the air quality around the airport as influenced by the emissions of the aircrafts. The cancer mortality in villages around the airport turned out to be comparable with that of a densely populated area. In the present study on the air pollution as caused by the emissions of the airport, calculations were made with a dispersion model. The following compounds were considered: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and polycyclic aromatic compounds. An important contribution to the regional levels is due to emissions by road traffic on the highways in the considered area. Summarizing it can be stated that the air pollution levels around Schiphol are elevated by the emissions from air traffic and road traffic. The levels are comparable with those in urban areas, but lower than in busy streets. These results are in agreement with the above mentioned investigation on cancer mortality.
