The document presents: A compilation of vehicle usage and environment data; Definitions of usage and environment; and A formulation of major vehicle type classifications. The report forms a groundwork for the development of vehicle safety performance tests and safety performance ratings for application to a prototype Safety Sedan or any other comparable car. A compilation of vehicle usage and vehicle environment data, an information gathering and processing task, was performed and the data was applied to fix definitions of vehicle environment and usage and to the formulation of major vehicle type classifications. Examples are presented to illustrate a general method of vehicle type classification. The method is applicable to all vehicles and will provide a variety of vehicle types from which a prototype safety car may be selected. (Author)
