In April 1989, Biman Bangladesh Airlines requested the U.S. Embassy for consultancy support to assess its fleet restructuring requirement to meet present and future air traffic demand. After several consultations with the embassy personnel, the U.S. Trade and Development Program (TDP) contracted for a definitional mission to explore the potential for a U.S. role in assisting Bangladesh in this area. The team expanded its review to include the overall aviation sector planning in the country. The experts have concluded that there are several projects which are urgently needed--procurement of new aircraft for domestic and regional haul and resurfacing of the runway at Zia International Airport being just two of the most pressing needs. They have further concluded that these and other pressing projects, such as the deployment of a VHF communication system for area air traffic control and the various training requirements, should be addressed.
