The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has filed an application for Federal capital grant assistance to construct an Extension of Long Island Rail Road which will include approximately 3.5 miles of underground rail system. One part will be in the Borough of Manhattan, and the other will be in the Borough of Queens. Approximately 1.8 miles will be in structure. Permanent adverse environmental impacts for this project include business displacement and relocation, noise and visual intrusions. There will be no relocation of families, however, two businesses, will be relocated. There will be temporary disruption of traffic and utilities, traffic congestion, community service disruptions, as well as, construction noises, dusts, solid waste and spoil disposals. The beneficial effects will be improvements in the mass transportation service for the Queens-Long Island Corridor to Manhattan. The air quality will improve in the area as a result of this project by decreasing automobile traffic.
