The report concerns an investigation into the loads induced in the suspension components of two types of passenger car, by road inputs and by driver controlled inputs, during parts of their in-service lives. Firstly, several of the suspension components of each type of car were strain gauged and the suspension loads measured on various defined road routes. Secondly, data loggers were installed in a small number of similar cars to collect data over a period of several months whilst being driven by members of the general public. The general parameters indicating the types of road surface and driver behavior were monitored along with data on the use of electrical components and other items of interest. The data was then analyzed to produce a data bank of information on the conditions that a vehicle is commonly subjected to during its service life.
