The report addresses the potential costs and benefits of telecommuting, focusing on future impacts of telecommuting on transportation, environment, and energy use. The report found that telecommuting is now practiced by approximately two million workers, and the figure could reach 7.5 to 15 million within a decade. Direct energy, air quality, safety, and time benefits associated with telecommuting will be increased as the degree of congestion is reduced, but air quality and congestion improvements could be diminished by latent travel demand effects. Telecommuting does seem to be one effective component of transportation demand management strategies. Appendices include summaries of telecommunting technologies and services, and profiles of major demonstration projects.
