Two future space station concepts -- an astronomical observatory and a synchronous space station -- are presented and their major technical problems discussed. Novel methods of passive shielding and thermal control which include the use of a separable solar shield and a bimetallic telescope structure are presented. Station keeping and attitude control of the synchronous space station through the use of a single ion-engine system in conjunction with passive techniques are discussed.
