This paper discusses the fuel and lubricant requirements and related problems of the 2-cycle outboard engine. The desirability of using commercial lead-containing automotive gasolines is stressed because of availability and price. Outboard motor oils should be designed to give satisfactory lubrication and minimize preignition and spark plug fouling when used with these fuels. The development of a new outboard motor oil formulation to minimize current problems is discussed. Engine tests and field results on leased fuels confirm that preignition and spark plug fouling can be materially reduced by the use of ethylene dibromide in an ashless outboard motor oil.
