The collaborating authors endeavor to present a mathematical means for determining from cost records the type and size of airplane that will produce the largest net revenue under the operating conditions of a given route.Conditions that influence operation are listed; factors that make up the earnings are outlined, discussed in detail and their relationship to one another and to the conditions of operation shown. An example of the earning factors on an assumed airline is set up and the effect of several airplane characteristics upon earnings are shown by operating-cost illustrations. The estimates have been kept as close as possible to the average for prospective operation.By this presentation of a method whereby an individual operator can compare alternative types of equipment and, with his knowledge of his specific airline conditions, decide upon the type that will produce maximum earnings, the authors hope they will help to remove the selection of transport airplanes from the uncertain realm of mere opinion.
