Abstract .In order to prolong the service life of electric locomotive’s pantograph in electric railway and make the pantograph sliding abrasion uniform, the contact line in catenary system is arranged by “zigzags”. If the stagger of contact line is too low, it cannot efficiently prolong the service life of electric locomotive’s pantograph. If the stagger of contact line is too high, the out-of-limit contact line may occur in extreme cases, which will result in accidents, such as scraping or hitting pantograph. Therefore, the stagger detection of contact line is very necessary to ensure the safe operation of catenary in electric railway. In addition, in order to keep the proper contact pressure and good contact between catenary and pantograph, the height of contact line should be in a certain range. Therefore, the height detection of contact line is also necessary.
