Thyristor chopper systems for electric-driven vehicles have been used, and are increasingly being accepted, in industry. While such systems allow reduction in power consumption, improved performance, and decreased maintenance costs, cooling methods have not similarly been improved. Conventional cooling uses forced air, a method that requires large-capacity blowers with their associated problems of audio noise, maintenance, and contamination of the electrical components being cooled. Freon cooling provides numerous advantages over air-cooled systems, including maximum current usability of semiconductor components, minimal size of magnetic components, reduction in overall equipment enclosure size, a sealed enclosure to eliminate component environmental contamination, elimination of forced air blower for cooling, ease of routine maintenance, and increased reliability. AiResearch Manufacturing Company, as part of its independent research and development programs, has designed, developed, and placed in revenue service a Freon-cooled chopper system for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) H-5 subway vehicle. This paper briefly describes the salient features of the chopper equipment.
