Belgian National Railways is resolutely continuing with its 3 kV DC electrification programme that will put 2450 route-km representing 60 per cent of the network under the wires by 1987. Simultaneously, selected trunk routes are being upgraded for 160 km/h operation. Such is the background to the development of a family of electric locomotives and multiple-units fitted with chopper control and designed to run at 160 km/h. The designs break with traditional concepts, and neither the new locos nor the EMUs will be compatible with earlier traction units.
