Performance and design aspects of controllable filling fluid couplings used as non-wearing clutches in high power naval reverse/reduction gearboxes are examined, together with their operating principles. Requirements of two different ship designs are contrasted; on a destroyer COSAG transmission the couplings have been located in the gas turbine line, whilst for a through-deck cruiser 'all-gas' arrangement they run at a lower speed on an intermediate shaft. Possible lines for future development of simpler and more compact designs are indicated.
