A case history is detailed of a programme of mechanical systems integrity management initiated by a major metropolitan transport authority. As with most transport authorities, it was heavily subsidised, being unable to fund itself from its own generated revenues. Financial limitations seriously affected operations and maintenance. The programme detailed was implemented in an effort to gain a cost-effective control of their rapidly deteriorating fleet of over-aged coaches, some 65 % of which were chronically classified at 'critical' during the first months of the programme. Four years later the fleet operation improved to the point where only 5 % of the 400 buses fell within the 'critical' status during any month. This enabled the fleet operator to extend the service interval by 100 %, indicating an optimisation of the maintenance expenditure on labour and materials.
