This paper describes the impact of effective tool maintenance information management on the performance of an advanced manufacturing system. An information management tool is used to support a Group Technology system in the automotive industry, which operates under Just-in-Time conditions. The system is an Object-Oriented Program coded in C++ under MS-DOS and running on an Ethernet network under Novell Netware. Access to the system is via a companywide LAN, such that data input and results distribution is highly localised and there is no data duplication. The direct savings expected by the company as a result of reduced maintenance requirements are in excess of Pounds Sterling 300000 p.a. Considerable indirect benefits on the manufacturing environment are achieved due to increased tool service life, availability and reliability.
