A controlled wheel creep system called 'Super Series' has been applied to Electro-Motive locomotives since 1978. This control system provides increased utilization of the available adhesion at the rail while reducing the use of sand. This paper includes a review of the EMD adhaesion research and the basic concepts of the Super Series wheel control system. Sand usage and wheel wear studies, and performance results on locomotives with both heavy and light axle loads are reported. Performance results include the Foster Yeoman JT26CW-SS (Class 59) locomotives now operating on the British Rail system.
