The comparison between ultrasonic pigs and magnetic flux leakage pigs for corrosion inspection of pipelines carrying oil and gas is discussed. Ultrasonic (UT) pigs offer a more-direct and more quantitative measurement of remaining wall thickness than do magnetic flux leakage (MFL) pigs, but have the inherent technical problems: the misinterpretation of distinct, multiple, front-wall echoes. Based on the performance specification, mechanic inspection system and data processing unit for UT pigs, the special design requirements and problems for small-diameter pipelines are given. The adaptation of UT pigs to the in-line inspection of small-diameter pipelines produces results that contain problems that must be overcome in order to achieve acceptable inspection performance. Some solutions to the problems stated above are proposed.
