This paper presents the design and use of a gateway module, GateKeeper, for automotive applications. GateKeeper translates messages between various speed CAN buses, running from 83.3 Kbps to 500 Kbps, and a J1850 bus operating at 10.4 Kbps. The hardware portion of the paper describes the processor selection and overall electrical design. The software development environment is discussed along with message translation methods. A description of the use of the J2190 protocol to enable and disable each individual CAN and J1850 message is also provided. An example application of GateKeeper is presented.
