Data bus systems for automotive applications are cutrently under development in many companies. Utilization of plastic optical fibres as transmission medium in such systems offers the advantages of low weight, immunity against electromagnetic distortion and galvanic isolation. The fibre optic transmission system presented here has the following characteristics: star topology with five connections, electrical interface (data in/data out with CMOS levels, supply voltage 5 V, Ground), transmission rate DC to 2 MBd, bit transparent, maximum line length 15 m, operating temperature range -40 Cel to +105 Cel. The key components of the system are: a novel type of star coupler, Fibre optic cable with high tensile strength, LED with high coupling efficiency to the fibre, receiver gate array with high sensitivity.
