In contrast to very highly developed and in most cases robot-automated panel production in shipbuilding, the generation of the required control data and operation parameters are marked by time-consuming manual work or by an inflexible and error-intolerant coupling to CAD systems. Therefore, a programming system was developed in the field of micro-panel production which fully automatically generates robot programs for the welding of tacked structures on the basis of component 3-D sensor data obtained on the spot. A development requirement was that the system can be integrated in existing robot and CMC-basedproduction units. The application of automatic robot programming by means of 3D digital isation results in a number of advantages for the user. The so far partly manually carried out robot programming process on the basis of CAD data is thus no longer necessary. The production process becomes independent from preparatory technological work and can react flexibly to changes. The generated robot programs are of a permanent high quality and independent of subjective errors of a programmer. By installing the robot programming system in the form of a test installation at the Warnowwerft shipyard, the usability of the system could be tested under real production conditions. The realised production simulation showed that an automatic robot programming also leads to shorter throughput times on the micro-panel line of the Warnowwerft shipyard and thus increases the productivity of the welding unit. Because of the good results from using automatic robot programming in the production of micro-panels it has been decided to further develop this technology and use it for the production of double-bottoms and curved panels, too.
