Decision-making on reliability issues at the design stage is critical in many industries. Since decisions at this point commit a company to a given production, marketing, service plan, and lock in most of the company's life cycle costs. In the vehicle safety context, the key challenges are the achievement of certain Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and reducing of uncertainties levels using optimization of system component reliability characteristics with regard to their corresponding cost. The concept of safety integrity level (SIL) is now prevalent in the field of safety-critical systems, and a number of standards advocate its use in the design and development of such systems. For mechatronic system, where random failures dominate, a numeric value of a SIL (as in IEC 61508) may be useful if it is possible to demonstrate quantitatively that a certain architecture or design will satisfy it. The contribution provides an approach to calculate optimal reliability characteristics of mechatronic system components with unknown fault histories in the application, provided that both the system topology (structure) is given and the reliability characteristics of the reminding components of system are known. Genetic Algorithms, pattern search are applied in this paper, in order to solve contradictions with a given objective function. The above mentioned optimization methods address the most efficient system architecture topology and ascertain the unknown reliability characteristics taking into account the mentioned contradictions (ASIL requirements, cost). The developed optimization approach attempts elaborately to deal with the dilemma posed by ASIL requirements for component reliability characteristics and cost question of vital components.
