Both at home and abroad, there is a strong demand for higher speed and higher density of train operation in metropolitan areas. Nevertheless, it has become necessary to meet the two contradictory demands as simultaneously as possible by introducing new technologies. In this article, the present condition of high-speed and high-congested train operation in the world is described, and our automatic train deceleration system (ATD), which is a high-congested train operation system suitable for the domestic railway situation, is proposed. Also, the concept of the next generation of railway systems which Hitachi aims at is clarified in four steps, from the current railway systems to the next generation of systems, with special reference to transportation capacity. In addition, various technical problems to be solved prior to the realization of next generation railway systems are summed up.
