This paper describes the simulation model of an induction motor traction drive for an AC locomotive running on AC railways. The main objective of the simulation is to evaluate the energy consumption and performance of the whole electric traction system. The proposed model can determine the average values of some electrical and mechanical quantities overcoming the need for long computation time. The model is implemented using C++ in order to become, according to object-oriented methodology, a class of an existing software simulator for AC railway systems. The adopted modelling technique achieves great modularity, flexibility and reusability of the software model and has created a new software class for two existing simulators developed at the universities of Birmingham and Salerno. Simulation results giving the shape of motor torque, voltage and current in the presence of supply voltage variations are presented, and comparisons between simulated and measured data, obtained from the test bed at ANSALDO Trasporti S.p.A., are reported.
