An attempt is made to provide both technical and managerial insight into the development of advanced avionic architectures and integrated subsystems based upon the work performed under the Integrated Communication, Navigation, Identification Avionics (ICNIA) Advanced Development Model (ADM) Program. ICNIA was one of the first systems to implement an integrated, modular architecture and support built-in-test (BIT), system reconfiguration, and signal simultaneity. The following issues are addressed: identification of design problems and concerns; system supportability and testability; and recommended managerial tactics and control strategies.
