Results are presented for a series of tests on spark ignition 4-stroke engines between 4.8 cc and 15 cc in capacity. Engines with conventional rings are compared with ringless engines relying on a close fitting piston to seal the combustion gases. Attempts to improve the engine efficiency by thermal insulation using both ceramic components and ceramic layers resulted in a considerable decrease in engine efficiency.
