In the early eighties, significant progress has been made in the automation and crack growth monitoring of large scale fatigue testing of structures and components. More recently advances have been concentrated on the realistic simulation of in-service conditions in the testing of these structures. These conditions include load history and environmental factors. This paper reviews the latest progress in the application of these techniques to the fatigue testing of offshore tubular joints. Efforts will be concentrated on reporting two major areas of development, namely the formulation of the Wave Action Standardised History (WASH) and the technique for testing tubular joints under multiple axis random load histories. The formulation of the WASH test sequence resulted from lengthy discussion among leading scientists in this field and the multiple axis testing is the final step to create a completely realistic simulation of in-service loading conditions. The paper will very briefly report on an innovative 'joint stiffness' approach to facilitate the implementation of this type of fatigue testing.
