Illustrated by the high-load backrest of a fibre composite seat with integral seat belt, the material selection process, design concept considerations and results of calculation and testing work for a complete supporting structure are presented. The development samples investigated satisfy the crash requirements and, compared to the metal supporting structure, have the advantage of fewer parts, a high component integration and significantly lower weight.
