The fast‐charging infrastructure is used to charge the EVs in a lesser time duration. A fast charger draws the electric power from the incoming power supply to charge the batteries. Lightning is a natural phenomenon and it will create overvoltage or overcurrent in an electric power system. Surge protection devices (SPD) are widely used to prevent electrical equipment from overvoltage and overcurrent produced by lightning strokes. The electric vehicle fast‐charging station equipment are also subject to the risk of overvoltage and overcurrent caused by direct or indirect lightning stroke. The SPD is essential and needs to be installed in the fast‐charging station to prevent the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) from overvoltage and overcurrent. This chapter discusses the requirements of SPD for the fast‐charging station.
