In recent years, the field of autonomous and intelligent vehicle systems has grown immensely with the recent advances in components, design, and implementation techniques to create the technology of the future. These rapid steps in the development of vehicle systems bring the opportunity in reducing pollution, traffic problems, energy use, and poor scheduling, whereas these advances to date have increased the complexity of such technology. Hence, several sub‐systems have been born from sensing, perception, and decision methodologies to deal with this highly complex system. On the other hand, one of the important tasks of the vehicle systems is to determine the level of automation in intelligent transportation including the combination of different technologies and the adaptation of sensors that show the ability of the vehicles to move autonomously. As of more recent updates in computing platforms, the usage of artificial intelligence techniques has also created a potential that increases the capabilities of self‐driving vehicles. This chapter provides a systematic review to cover key fundamentals that make vehicles autonomous and their applications in intelligent transportation networks.
