Lessons Learned: A Guide to Improved Aircraft Design features a lifetime of practical insight into the aspects of aircraft design that cannot be solved via technical means. The lessons learned have nothing to do with the mechanics of doing conceptual design, rather they address and influence the design team’s state of mind and the human principles to be used when dealing with the customer. It is a concise, informative summary of mistakes to avoid, and best practices to pursue, that lead to successful aircraft design programs. “Based upon a distinguished career in research and program development in the U.S. Air Force and industry, Dr. Nicolai has provided keen insight into lessons learned from aircraft system development programs over the past several decades. Recommended reading for anyone interested in aircraft systems.” --Dr. G. Keith Richey, Chief Scientist, Flight Dynamics Laboratory, Wright Patterson AFB (retired). “Many years spent working with Lee Nicolai gives me unique insight into his motivation for writing this book. Its purpose is not to embarrass, or to be critical of, individuals or companies. Rather, it is intended to be an honest critique of programs and events that are part of aircraft history. Lee presents lessons learned as honestly and objectively as possible. A must read for everyone from college seniors to program managers.” --Grant Carichner, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (retired), and co-author of Fundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design, Volumes 1 and 2. ABOUT THE AUTHOR LELAND M. NICOLAI received his aerospace engineering degrees from the University of Washington (B.S.), the University of Oklahoma (M.S.), and the University of Michigan (Ph.D.). His aircraft design experience includes 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Colonel, and 32 years in industry. He is an AIAA Fellow and recipient of the AIAA Aircraft Design Award, the SAE Clarence L. Kelly Johnson Aerospace Vehicle Design and Development Award, The Engineers Council Clarence L. Kelly Johnson Skunk Works Award, and the Lockheed Martin Aero Star Award. He served as a Lockheed Martin Fellow at the Skunk Works and is the author of numerous publications, including Fundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design, Volume 1 and Fundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design, Volume 2
