Experimental studies of the critical thermophysical properties of a one-component fluid, such as the noble gas Xenon, are greatly handicapped by critical slowing down. The thermal diffusion coefficient, D, varies (roughly) as the reciprocal of the correlation length, which diverges at the critical point. The diffusion time for a fluid sample of size l can, therefore, be expected to grow to infinity according to l 2 / D , as the critical point is approached. However, for a confined fluid that is kept at constant volume, there is a prompt adiabatic response. This is characterized by l eff 2 /D, where l eff is l divided by the specific heat ratio. The very strong temperature dependence of the latter dominates and reverses the trend near the critical point. Nevertheless, some trouble remains because, after the rapid adiabatic temperature change in the fluid, there is a slow, lingering deviation from equilibrium that is proportional to t −1/2 , the inverse square root of the time, t. Waiting for this deviation to drop to a negligible level would entail an extravagant expenditure of time. We are proposing to avoid this by monitoring the fluid as a function of t and by plotting the experimental data versus t −1/2 . The intercept would then yield the desired equilibrium value without having to wait for full equilibrium to be attained.
