The Series II alkali metal thermal to electric converter (AMTEC) cell, developed over the last year, represents a significant engineering advance in AMTEC technology, and major step toward spacecraft and terrestrial applications. The PX-5 cell is the most recent design in the Series II development sequence. It is the highest power, highest efficiency cell produced to date, and there remain some significant performance improvements that will still occur over the coming year as cell components improve. Numerical performance models have been and will continue to be used to guide the development effort. These models, which have been validated against extensive test data, predict that the performance currently measured in cells under test at this time will improve by nearly 50% as components reach the current development goals.
