In order to analyze the differences in spatial characteristics of commuting under different modes of transportation and commuting time, this paper takes Xi’an mobile signaling data as the basis, sets out the travel OD between blocks, and then constructs four types of commuting networks based on different modes of transportation and commuting time: road-efficient commuting, road-extreme commuting, subway-efficient commuting, and subway-extreme commuting. The commuting community structure is detected by Infomap algorithm. The study shows that the spatial characteristics of four commuting networks are significantly different. Subway mainly serves long commuting hours, and its commuting space range, number of communities, and modularity are smaller than that of road commuting. Compared to efficient commuting, extreme commuting has a lower modularity, and its distribution of communities is scattered and irregular. The findings of the study provide support for urban spatial planning and transportation planning and management.
