Fire protection and response is most costly as an important public service in urban areas. It is essential to optimize fire station locations because the loss can be unbearably high due to a fire disaster if no timely and reliable fire response service is available. This paper reviews (1) key factors considered in fire station location formulation, (2) development of the covering and maximum covering approaches to this problem, and (3) heuristic algorithms to solve the problem. Remarks have been provided on new factors that may affect the choice of fire station locations, including traffic congestion, uncertainties, and the latest technologies.
