For train speeds between 25 and 155 mph, rolling noise is the primary source of railway noise. Rolling noise levels depend highly on the roughness in the wheel/rail contact area. In this paper, the characteristics of wheel and rail surface roughness were studied by field tests in the Shanghai rapid transit system. The results showed that the maximum amplitude roughness for wheel tread is about 30 μm, and for rail head it can reach 0.78 mm. Therefore, the rail head roughness plays a large role in wheel/rail interaction. The maximum rail head roughness level at the contact area is about 15 dB higher than one at a non-contact area. The state of the wheels' roughness deteriorates more as mileage increases. It can also be seen that the rail head roughness in contact areas falls in the range of 0.125~1m, while the range for roughness at non-contact areas falls between 0.1~2m. The roughness range of wheels with 20,000 and 80,000 km fall between 0.05 ~ 0.5m and 0.125 ~ 0.5m, respectively.
