Pigging is an integral part of procedures during construction, commissioning, operations, and maintenance of gas and oil pipelines. Pigging procedures are also known and used by a number of professionals in the water and sewage infrastructure sector. Notwithstanding, greater implementation of such procedures in the water and sewage sector could produce significant costs savings that would result from improved quality control during construction; and more efficient and sustainable operations and maintenance programs. This paper will discuss helpful conceptual information related to: the use of pigging tools and procedures during construction, operation, and maintenance activities; selection of appropriate pigs; progressive pigging; tracking, launching, and receiving of pigs; and design of pipelines, and launching and receiving stations to facilitate pigging.
