The thermal exchange coefficient between subsea soil and buried pipeline is a very important parameter for submarine pipeline design. It has a complex relationship with the heat conductivity coefficient of subsea soil and depth of pipeline buried below the seabed. To determine the thermal exchange coefficient, soil samples of different depth under seabed are sampled and tested. According to test results, 3.7W/(m2 K) of thermal exchange coefficient of subsea soil is recommended. To verify it, temperature drops of two submarine pipelines -SZ36-1 and BX submarine pipeline in Bohai Sea in China - are calculated and compared with practical temperature drop of two pipelines, respectively. The computational results are very close to practical results. It indicates that the recommended thermal exchange coefficient is suitable and reasonable for a submarine pipeline. It is very helpful for the designers and engineers to determine the crude oil temperature drop of submarine pipeline at the stage of pipeline design.
